• What is a Groundwater Management Plan?

A Groundwater Management Plan outlines what is known about a groundwater problem, how the problem will be monitored and what will be done to deal with it.

The Groundwater Management Plan is an integral part of the Environment Improvement Plan required under the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Waste Discharge Licence No. EA5280. This licence is currently under review by the EPA following the shutdown of the groundwater treatment system and subsequent cessation of waste generation at the site.

• What is an Environment Improvement Plan?

An Environment Improvement Plan details the way that the process (environmental improvement) shall be managed. A condition of the EPA Waste Discharge Licence stated the Environment Improvement Plan would need to be prepared in consultation with the community and it would need to be approved by the EPA for the operation of the Groundwater Treatment System. The Environment Improvement Plan will be updated once the EPA have completed a review of the existing Waste Discharge Licence.

• What was the purpose of the Plan?

The plan set out what would be done about the impacts on groundwater quality arising from past operations at the Altona Plant. Our aim in the Plan was to provide information about the impacts. In addition, the Plan provided contact details for people looking for more information.

• Who prepared the Plan?

The Plan was prepared by Altona Properties with the assistance of our groundwater consultants, Parsons Brinckerhoff. The community and EPA have provided input to the Plan through their participation in the Altona Properties Soil & Groundwater Review Group.
